Inferring link characteristics from end-to-end path measurements

چکیده
In the Internet, because of huge scale and distributed administration, it is of practical importance to infer network-internal characteristics that cannot be measured directly. In this paper, we propose a general method of determining characteristics of links from given characteristics of end-to-end paths. Our method can be applied to an arbitrary path-topology. Furthermore we show the general conditions that the link characteristics to be inferred must satisfy. Packet loss and queuing delay time are shown to satisfy them. Case studies which our method can treat are also provided.

Measurement Design Framework for Network Tomography Using Fisher Information
In this paper, we study the design of measurements to infer link parameters by measuring end-to-end performance along selected paths. While existing work focuses on the inference problem under given path measurements, the accuracy of inference fundamentally hinges on the set of available measurements. To this end, we propose a generic framework to design measurements for link parameter tomograp...

In the Internet, because of huge scale and distributed administration, it is of practical importance to infer network-internal characteristics that cannot be measured directly. In this paper, based on a general framework we proposed previously, we present a feasible method of inferring packet loss rates of individual links from end-to-end measurement of unicast probe packets. Compared with meth...

This thesis focusses on problems related to (i) Inference of Congestion in the Internet and (ii) Multicast Traffic Engineering in Overlay Networks. In the first part of the thesis, we propose methods which help to improve the quality of the congestion inference on both end-to-end paths and internal network links in the Internet. Today, transport protocols which transfer data in the Internet cla...
متن کاملMulticast-based inference of network-internal loss characteristics
Robust measurements of network dynamics are increasingly important to the design and operation of large internetworks like the Internet. However, administrative diversity makes it impractical to monitor every link on an end-to-end path. At the same time, it is difficult to determine the performance characteristics of individual links from end-to-end measurements of unicast traffic. In this pape...
متن کاملUnicast inference of network link delay distributions from edge measurements
Inference of network internal link characteristics has become an increasingly important issue for operating and evaluating large telecommunication networks. Since it is usually impractical to directly monitor each link along a specific path, end-to-end probes are sometimes used to collect link characteristic information at edge nodes of the network. This paper deals with unicast probing methods...
